Ways To Use Articles To Expand Your Online Business

By: Karl Sultana

So you created or have hired someone to create some articles. Did you know there are several ways you can benefit from these articles not just one or two ways?

First of all you can submit each article to article directories to get one way links. Even if you are not doing search engine optimization, you will still get benefit by doing article submission. You receive traffic as well.

Second you can put these articles on your website or blog. Create a new page for each article. Content is king on the Internet.

You can contact webmasters which have websites or blogs in your niche and tell them you wish to swap articles or contribute your articles to their blog. Both Blogger and Wordpress platforms allow you to add authors on your blog. So these webmasters can add you as an author and you can post your articles to their blogs whenever you wish.

Swapping articles means you post the webmasters articles on your blog or website and they put your articles on theirs. This has two benefits. Content and backlinks. Both help search engine rankings. Article exchanges are better than link exchanges, even though they are more difficult to do.

You can visit internet business related forums. See if they have a section where you can trade, swap or exchange links and private message users to ask them for an article exchange. You can also use this technique and contact webmasters asking them to become an author for their blog.

When you become an author of another blog, you can link to your own website from within the article, or by creating a bio. A bio is simple few lines of text that either promotes your websites or talks about you. In bio you put a link to your own website. So it is a win win situation. You can backlinks and the webmasters gets free content.

There are other places you can submit your articles like social bookmarking websites. Simple post your articles on your blog, then bookmark these blog posts.

There are several sites that accept stories, but usually approve also articles, not just stories. There are blog carnivals. These are websites that display top blog posts about a particular subject. There are thousands of blog carnivals on any topic, and you simple submit your blog posts that contain articles to these websites.

You can transform your articles into an ebook. You can put several chapters in the ebook, putting each article as a new chapter. You may want to edit it a bit and you have a ready made ebook. It might not be good idea to try and sell it, since the information is also on your blog for free.

But you can give it away for free and build a list. So people have to optin to your list in order to get a free copy of your ebook. You build your list, and they get free ebook. You can then promote products to your list once you build a relationship with them. But if you do not put the articles on your blog you can sell the ebook.

So do not just submit your articles to article directories like everyone else is doing. Be creative and you get more benefits.

Generate Free Targeted Traffic Thru Social Networking

By: Pugsley Bartholomew

If you are looking for some good ways to use social bookmarking, then I have come up with a list of 4 ways. These are proven methods, and things I personally do for my own websites and for client’s websites. I am currently doing freelance internet marketing promoting this method and have been successful with each and every project. Here is the list of 4 ways to use social bookmarking.

1. Let’s start with the obvious. It is a very good way to keep a web based bookmark list of your favorite sites. You can easily set up an account with one of the social networking sites (I can not list them all, as there are like 350 - 400). Delicious seems to be a popular one, so use that one for the sake of this conversation. Just register an account, and then when you see something you like, then bookmark it. You can now do this from any computer you may be at.

2. Another way is to use them as free one-way links. If you are an internet marketer, then you definitely know the value of one-way links to your website. You can use these sites to bookmark your own website or blog. Each and every time you add a new page to a website, or add a new blog post, then bookmark it. This will give you an outside link into your website. Google’s PR system works off of this.

3. Now that you have a bookmarked list, use their RSS feed. These sites will have an rss feed of all of your social bookmarks. You can use these in your blogs, like in the sidebar. This will give another area for links to your site. Maybe you have a Squidoo website set up. If so, then use their RSS module, and link to your rss feed on your social bookmarking site. You can also ping this rss feed, which will allow other outlets to know you have new information and links available. Many people overlook this method, and it is very easy to do.

4. The last one is to have a place for Google to find you. These social networking sites have pretty high PR because so many people are linking to them. And, with the amount of information, new information, being generated at these sites, Google will spider them very often. This is how I can write a blog post, and have it number 1 on Google in 6 hours. Google will use the social site as the entry way into your site. The best site to use for this is Digg. I personally Digg every single blog post I have. Sometimes the Digg link will rank higher than my blog, but who cares. I now have a link on the front page of Google for people to find me.

Those are 4 ways to use social bookmarking. They are pretty simple and straight forward, but you would be amazed at how many people are not even looking at this. Try some of them out and see how they work for you.

24 Essential Pages to include on Your Website

Wondering what pages to include on your website and why? Here is a list of important information that should be included on your site.

Before you start thinking about what to write, it is important that you create a plan, which outlines what each page will contain. That way you won’t repeat yourself or forget vital information. The most common pages on successful websites include:

1. Home Page (First Page)

This is your “sales” page and should provide information about what you can do for your customers. It should also give your visitors a brief overview of what they can find on your site.

2. Products / Services

It is useful to have a separate page for each product/service and write as much detail about each as possible. Start each page with a brief summary of the product/service, then provide whatever information you can. When people are searching for information on the Internet, they want to know it NOW. They don’t want to wait until tomorrow when they can speak to you on the phone.

3. Contact Us

Place contact details in as many places as possible. Make it easy for your customers to contact you. Create a special “Contact Us” page and include your details in the “About Us” page and also at the bottom of each page. Information to include: business name, physical address, mailing address, telephone, fax, email, emergency number, website address.

4. Pricing

Whenever possible include the price of your products/services. Even if you can’t be specific. It is helpful to put at least a range of prices, eg. Carpet cleaning ranges between $40 - $60 per room.

5. Testimonials / Product Reviews / Before & After

Include testimonials from your current customers to show your potential clients that you are trustworthy, reliable and that you provide great service and/or products. Make sure the testimonials are real and if possible provide contact details of the person who supplied you with the testimonial. If you don’t have any right now, get them! Simply email your customers and ask for their feedback on your business and service.

You could also include before and after photos. Show the problem picture and beside it show the picture of resolution, with an explanation of your product’s benefits.

6. Frequently Asked Questions

This has proven to be a great time saver for many companies. Instead of having to answer the same questions over and over again, place them on your website and keep adding to them. The more information you have on your website, the less time you will need to spend answering questions by email or phone.

Frequently Asked Questions should address your customer’s concerns that may otherwise be an obstacle to making a sale.

7. Response form such as “Subscribe” or “Enquiry” form

An absolute must if you want to build a mailing list. Most people don’t like giving out too much information, so ask only the basics, such as Name and Email Address. Then keep in touch with your customers on a regular basis by sending out information that may be of interest to them. You may even wish to develop an on-line magazine (ezine). There are many fantastic free or inexpensive programs that can handle this for you.

8. On-line Magazine or Newsletter

This is a great marketing tool. Not only does it help you keep in touch with your customers, but provides your website with fresh content. You can set up your Ezine in 2 different ways:

(a) Email subscribers on a regular basis, or
(b) Publish it on your website.

Or both. Include information about your business, industry or anything that may be of interest to your customers.

9. Resources/Articles

Add value to your business. Provide information that is complementary to what you do. For example, if you sell wedding dresses include information about reception venues, wedding planners, wedding cakes, flowers. By adding extra information you encourage more hits.

10. About Us

This is a very important page as it tells your customer about who you are and why they should buy your products, services and/or trust your organization. It can also feature your business hours (if you have a bricks and mortar store) or when they can speak to someone on the phone. Many companies also include their mission, details of their staff (photos, biographies, qualifications), recently completed projects, ACN or ABN, logo, directions to your store/office. It is also useful to include details of trade associations you belong to, trade and insurance certificates and any awards you may have won.

11. Guarantee

Provide a money back policy. The longer the policy period, the more effective it will be. It could be 30 days, 60 days, 1 year or lifetime.

12. Survey

Find out what customers think about your website, business or product.

13. Events Calendar

This can relate to your business or industry. If you are an artist, you can feature dates where and when your art will be displayed or if you are a singer, where you will be performing.

14. Search My Website Feature

Some visitors to your site may not know exactly what they want, but if you include a search function on your site, they can look for it very easily. Like search engines, this feature will allow your visitors to type in a word or phrase and then search for it on your site. It’s like having a mini search engine, only instead of it searching the world wide web, it just searches your website.

15. Return/Refund Policy

To make your customers feel more comfortable when making a transaction at your website, you should provide them with your return/refund policy. Ensure it is easy to understand and spelled out step by step.

16. Privacy Policy

Privacy continues to be a major issue for customers shopping online. Concerns about how their information is going to be used is a major barrier when making a sale. Internet shopping experience is built on trust and privacy is the number one ingredient in trust.

17. Site Map

A site map shows visitors how the site is laid out and which sections are where.

18. Copyright Information

Your website should carry a copyright notice to protect its intellectual property. It is generally in the form of “Copyright (c) 2004, Your Company Name”.

19. Links

Here you can place links to the manufacturers of your products, trade associations or complementary services. When you place links to other businesses, you can request they do the same for you. This will not only bring you more visitors, but may improve your search engine ranking.

20. Media Information

Include any information, articles, photos of your products, staff etc that have appeared in the media - print, TV, radio or internet.

21. News

This can include news about your products/services or about your industry.

22. On-line store

An on-line store allows you sell products directly on the internet 24 hours a day/7 days a week. When building an online store it is important to take in a number of key concepts.

Make sure that when visitors arrive at your store the navigational mechanisms are simple and effective.
The actual process of placing the order must be simple.
Make sure you accept common and convenient methods of payment.
Continually test your store so you understand your customer’s shopping experience.

23. Blog

A blog is a journal that is available on the web. The activity of updating a blog is “blogging” and someone who keeps a blog is a “blogger.” Blogs are typically updated daily or weekly using software that allows people with little or no technical background to update and maintain the blog. Blogs are a great tool because they help with:

(a) Communicating with your customers. Blogs provide a way for you to communicate with your customers directly. And it is a two-way communication. You can post a message on your blog and your visitors can easily respond.
(b) Search Engine Marketing Blogs give you an increased presence on search engines, like Yahoo! and Google. If you use Blogger (Google’s Blogging Tool), every message you post creates a new page on Google so in a very short time you could have lots of pages pointing to your website.
(c) Stay Ahead of Your Competition Blogs are relatively new and chances are your competition does not yet use them. So you will be seen as an expert in your industry when you post your knowledge and expertise.
(d) Media & Public Relations Blogs are excellent PR tools. You can post your Media Releases and articles and have them picked up by the media.
(e) Free or Low Cost

24. Photo Gallery

Even if you do not wish to sell your products on-line, you may wish to showcase your goods or services in a special photo gallery - show how your products or services are being used by your customers. They say “pictures speak a thousand words” and on your website it is particularly important.

Don’t give your customers a reason to visit your competitor’s website and provide them with all the information they may possibly need or want.

How To Make Money Online With Blogs

It is amazing how many different ways there are for people to make money on the internet. For this very reason, the internet is filled with entrepreneurs looking to make it big. If you too are wondering how to make money online today, one method that is gaining in popularity is blogs.

More and more people are beginning to realize that blogs can be a great way to make money. It is becoming almost essential to have a blog in conjunction with a web site. The two compliment each other nicely and give you a legitimate chance to make money online today. Here are a few ways for how to make money online with blogs.

The most common way to make money with blogs is by selling advertising space. If you build a large enough blog, people are going to want to advertise on your blog for exposure. As people come to your site, they will see the ads and potentially click on the other web site. This is precisely why people are willing to pay for ad space.

If you cannot build a blog big enough, you can take advantage of Google AdSense and BlogAds. Both of these are free and you get paid based on the number of times the ads are clicked on. While you cannot make a great deal of money from this, you can certainly make some extra money on the side.

The next way to make money with blogs is by simply selling your own products. You do not want to get in the habit of having your blog be another web site. However, there is nothing wrong with making a post from time to time about a new product you may have. Take this opportunity to explain how your product can benefit them. You will come off as a trustworthy businessman as oppose to just another person wanting to make money.

If you do not have your own web site or even if you do you can promote affiliate programs as well. You can do this by making a post or two about new products, or by placing ads and banners from the affiliate program. Every program you join should come with a number of banner ads to place.

The last thing you need to know about how to make money online with blogs is consistency. If you make a post once a week, people are not going to be willing to come back to your blog. You have to be devoted enough to make at least one or two posts every day. It shows that you care about your blog and the people that come to it. In addition, it will keep people entertained and coming back for more.

Blogs are the new way to make money on the internet today. It is almost essential to have a blog that goes along with your web site. There are a number of different ways you can make money with a blog online. Take the tips listed in this article and start making money with your blog today.

How to Bring more Traffic to Your Website ??

The most important aspects to having successful online business are your marketing and advertising efforts. If you do not get any traffic to your online business website it is very difficult to make any money with your online business. Let’s talk about five ways to generate traffic to your website.

1. Forums

Forums are by far the most effective free advertising you can do for your website. By posting in online forums, it allows you to open up and show your true personality. You have a possibility to be in contact with your potential customers and make them trust you. In addition, you can display your expertise on the particular niche you are in.

2. Blog

It is becoming more and more popular to have a blog to go along with your online business. Starting an online business blog allows you, just like posting in forums, to achieve more personal aspect with your targeted visitors. While you get to lead the conversation, you can act much more casual and show who you really are. This is much more effective than hiding behind your website name.

3. Article writing

Regardless of what type of website someone has, everyone needs quality content and fresh ideas. Article writing gives you the ability to show your expertise and also offer fresh and appealing content to other website owners. There are a numerous amount of article directories online where you can post your articles within a category of your niche. As people search through this particular category and read your articles, they can then find your website link in your resource box.

4. Link exchanges

Link exchanges are not quite as effective as the methods listed above, but it is still a great way to generate more traffic to your online website. Using this method you agree with someone to place his or her link to your site. In exchange, they place your link on their site. The hope is that when visitors go to their site, they will hopefully see your link and follow it to your site.

5. Banner advertising

Banner advertising can be an effective paid advertising method for your online business. You just need to find a high traffic volume website within your niche and then pay the site owner in order to place your banner on their site. A disadvantage using banner advertising is that your traffic is limited to only the people who go to their site.

Generating targeted traffic to your online website is very crucial to your online success. You have to do everything you can to generate a heavy traffic volume to bring in as much business as possible.

SEO Techniques and Practices used by most of the Professionals

Domain Name:

As much as possible, try to obtain a domain name that most closely identifies to your visitors what your website or business is about. A domain name that exactly matches your business is not critical but it is desireable. Obviously websites like Google, Ebay, and Amazon did not choose this route. Their names were given meaning by strategic marketing, branding, and popularity (the first two can be time consuming and expensive). Other websites like YouTube, Facebook, and MySpace are great examples of websites that chose a brandable domain name that concisely describes what they are all about. Regardless of which route you take, make sure your domain name is easy to spell and easy to remember. Try to avoid hyphens, numbers, and specially long names.

File & Directory Names:

When building your directory structure(file names) make sure to use your keywords. For example, if your website is about computers and you have a section (directory) about notebooks, name that directory or file “notebooks.” Does this seem obvious and non-worthy of discussion? You will be surprised at the mess or urls found on the internet.

For example, take a look at this real link: ( http://www.webexpress.in/products/products.asp?N=200076 ). Does that link describe what you will find if you click on the link or make use of any keywords? Compare the previous link to this cleaner version ( http://www.webexpress.in/top_sellers.asp ). Not only does the second link describe what you will find at the end of the link (top selling), it is also making use of keywords and is visually cleaner. While search engines may or may not place a great deal of emphasis on file & directory names using keywords, they clearly stand out under search results because they are cleaner, easier to read, and the keywords are highlighted by the search engines (hence, visitors are more likely to click on your website).

Relevant Content:

This is without question the most important aspect in terms of Search Engine Optimization: Relevant, up-to-date, valuable content will increase many factors to make your site stand out above the rest. Search engines will index your pages and direct search engine users to your pages, if they are most relevant to what a user is searching for. User will also visit your site more often and provide for the best free advertisement (word-of-mouth advertisement). Along with relevant content, make sure to use keyword phrases and keep an effective keyword density (see the following bullet points).

Fresh Content:

Periodically update your content to reflect changes. You don’t necessarily have to re-write the entire website; however, as relevance changes (it could be prices, products, news, buzz words, etc), you should also change your content to reflect your business or website better. The fastest, easiest way to this is by making use of dynamic scripting languages such as php, asp, jsp, or cfml. Scripting languages are a powerful way to make changes site wide with very minimal effort. Take a look at our script installation service for examples of scripts.

Title Tag:

Title tags are used by the search engines as the first line describing your web page on their search results. In terms of relevancy (what determines your page showing in the results), title tags play an important role. Therefore, make sure to make each title count by making them a clear, very concise description (using your keywords) of what each page is about. Don’t use the same title tag across your entire site, each page should have it’s own unique title. Since people will be reading these on the search results, put some thought into what would attract you to visit one site over another site based simple on the title tag. The beginning of your title tag should have what you consider the most important keywords; most SEOs (Search Engine Optimizers) consider the name of your business or site secondary and recommend placing it at the end of your title (this is a matter of business strategy). Search engine will not use all of the title tag for long titles, make sure the title tag is kept to less than 10 words. Most importantly, do not leave title tags empty!

Keyword Phrases:

When we are using the term “keywords,” we are generally talking about the words being typed and searched for by real search engine users to find products, services, or information. Normally, users will use a combination of words/phrases to find sites related to what they want. For example, someone searching for a portable mp3 player may search using the following ‘keywords’: “apple ipod” or “mp3 player” or “Tune player” or “4gb ipod nano.” If you are simply using or focusing on “mp3 player” you are clearly missing out. The small, seemingly insignificant use of “apple ipod” instead of “mp3 player” can have a dramatic result on whether search engines and visitors find you. Find out what actual words users are typing in to find what they want (as related to your site) and bridge the gap by utilizing those keywords in your content and marketing. Visually, when you want to point to user something that is important you may bold or make a phrase a title. Likewise, search engines know to place a higher emphasis on page titles, headings, and link titles. Here’s an example of what you can do:

1. Use keywords in your titles. For example:

2. Use keywords in your headings. For example:

Features of the 4Gb iPod Nano

instead of simply

Features

3. Your links should make use of your keywords. For example: “Search Engine Optimization Articles” instead of simply “articles”

Keyword Density:

Keyword density describes the percentage of words in your webpage content that are related to your keywords. If you have a 10,000 word webpage but only use your keywords 3 times, you have a very low keyword density. If you are using titles, headings, and other visual and structural techniques to incorporate your keywords effectively, you should have at the very least an acceptable keyword density. On the other hand, if you use the same word or phrase over and over and over and over and over (get the point), your webpage may be considered spam and can actually result in your website being dropped in rankings or even blacklisted. Be conscious and strategic in your placement of keywords, but do not make unnecessary and excessive use of them.

Black-Hat SEO:

Certain search engine optimization techniques can result in getting your website banned from a search engine (definitely not something you want to do). These include doorway pages, link farms, mirror sites, cloaking, invisible text, unusually high keyword density, mirror or identical pages, deceptive use of refresh or redirect tags, pop up and comment/author tags with unnecessary keywords. We won’t go into the details here (remember, you are trying to avoid these techniques). The reasons people will employ these unacceptable SEO methods is to attempt to increase their search engine placement, and, while these techniques may work in the short term, long term they have a negative effect.

Meta Description Tag:

A description tag, as the name implies, should be a one to two sentence description of what the page is about. Search engines do not place a great of emphasis on the description tag, as they once did, because they were often abused with keyword stuffing. Some search engines will take the first words of your content text and display that versus the description tag. Because it should only take seconds to include and it still plays a role, if very minor role, in some search engines, you should include a description tag. Like the title tag, make sure each page has a sufficient description of what the page is about. Do not make the description tag a lengthy novel, one to two short sentences is perfect.

Meta Keywords Tag:

Like the description tag, the meta keywords tag is not as important as it once was. Again, due to abuse, some search engine simply ignore or place very little weight on the meta keyword tag. However, do not leave out this tag, remember the extent of its importance towards relevance may be arguable but it should only take seconds to include. Include approximately 10 - 15 keywords (don’t over do it) and make each page’s meta tag unique.

Author Tag:

Use the author tag to name your company or website name. For example:

Use Search Engine Friendly URLs:

Websites that use dynamic urls are difficult for search engines to index. Take a look at the following url:

(http://www.amazon.com/books-used-books-textbooks/b/ref=sa_menu_bo0?ie=UTF8& node=283155&pf_rd_p=328655101&pf_rd_s=left-nav-1&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i= 507846&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=11TVEA3AFJX2MS8NYY8B)

Not only is it difficult to read and a sore on the eyes, it also makes it difficult on search engines. Most scripting languages, like php, have methods of rewriting these to make them more readable (both to humans and the crawlers that index your pages). Amazon has a great deal of resources to counter the negatives of dynamic urls (for example a large marketing budget, incredible popularity, and vast content), your website or business may not have such deep pockets or resources; therefore, keep your urls search engine friendly.

If you have a website dedicated to used-car classifieds it will rank higher when a user searches for “used cars” Alternatively, if your site offers classifieds from real estate to cars to alternative medicines, your website will rank lower because its theme is being spread thin. Try to keep the topic of your website as focused and specific as possible. Any topic clearly not related to your main theme should be moved to its own domain.

Website Design:

The design of your site is very important to SEO in that once users have found your site, you want them to stay longer, return often, and provide word-of-mouth advertisement (including link backs to your site). A poor website design will make user’s leave and the great deal of effort placed on other areas of SEO will have been wasted. The topics of website design are extensive and beyond the scope of this small article. You can find a great deal of free resources or employ a company dedicated for this important task.

Make use of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS):

Using CSS is not only good practice for making your html pages cleaner and more readable for designers and coders, but it also removes excessive and repetitive code from you web pages. Cascading Style Sheets can make your pages up to 2 times smaller in size (increasing the speed at which your web page is loaded). The code necessary to add presentation to your pages do not in themselves help your search engine placement; therefore, separating the code into CSS helps reduce unnecessary text from your content. It also facilitates making changes across your website a snap as you will only need to change the code in 1 file (the css file).

Frames:

There are only a very small number of valid reasons to use frames. If you have that specific need, try to keep them at a minimum and provide alternatives for users that have browsers that don’t support frames. Some users (including search engines crawlers) are not able to follow framed links. There are much better, acceptable methods to accomplish what frames were once widely used for; try to avoid frames.

Site Map:

A good site map makes it easier for search engine spiders to crawl and index your entire website. Google webmaster tools has easy ways for your to create your site map. Also, many sites use the footer or a dedicated as their sitemap. Try to keep the links to less than 100 (as recommended by Google).

Broken Links:

From time to time, you may run across broken links, due to changes in websites that you are linking to or even to your own webpages due to design or structure changes. Make sure to check for broken links. A standard practice is to provide users a method to provide feedback. If your site has considerable amount of links, make sure to provide a simple, accessible form for users to report broken links. Broken links have a negative effect on usability and also impact your search engine placement.

Robot Tag & Robots.txt File:

Use a robots tag on pages that you do not want indexed. For example: A better use, however, is to use the robots.txt file. Search engines look for this file in your web root directory in order to determine what pages, directories, or files the search engine crawler should avoid. For example, if you have a password protected administration panel under the directory “www.yoursite.com/admin” you can specify to the crawler to avoid indexing that specific directory. It is important to include this file for two reasons, it is incredibly easy to create and it avoids having sensitive directories or pages indexed.

To Set up a blog, go to Blogger at http://www.blogger.com. Set up your blog and begin posting in no time. This is a good and quick setup for getting your site started and getting searched by Google.

When this is done, set your site up for Google Adsense (http://adsense.google.com). Remember to follow the Google Adsense Terms of Service.

Google bills advertisers on Pay per Click basis (PPC). Advertisers are required to pay only when any visitor clicks on their ads. They bid against each other for the keywords in order to receive better placement and thus prices for each keyword differ from one another. It is better to choose keywords for your blog which pays high $ per click.

Amazon Associate program is another important way to make money blogging. The Amazon Associate program gives opportunity to blog publishers to promote any product from its inventory by adding a predefined code to their website/blog, which, when clicked by a visitor, takes them to the relevant product page. Once the visitor buys the product, the blog owner will be compensated with a commission.

SEO Practical Tips - A new insights

Search engine optimization can seem like a big black hole to solo entrepreneurs. On the one hand, the cost of most professional SEO services are beyond our budgets; and it’s difficult to assess the effectiveness of these services before you buy. On the other hand, if we try to do it ourselves, the process can be bewildering! There is so much to learn about: new terminology; a myriad of “rules” for optimizing your website (that change constantly as search engine algorithms change); lots of tools for analyzing and measuring all kinds of things that may or may not be helpful. Below are a few tips I’ve learned over the last several years as a solo entrepreneur optimizing my own site; I hope they help you navigate the maze of search engine optimization, and save some money in the process.

1. Beware SEO services that promise to get you top ranking for a particular keyword. Aside from the fact that they are often quite expensive, what they are promising is often not even effective. It doesn’t help much to rank highly for “blue ceramic frogs” if only a dozen people search for that term in a month! Also, search engine optimization isn’t a one-time activity; it’s an ongoing process. If you’ve paid someone to do the work for you, and three months later there is a change to search engine algorithms or in your website focus, you’ll be faced with paying for this service all over again!

2. Don’t fall for tools, tricks and “secrets” that attempt to game the system. Known as “black hat SEO”, these tricks are usually only helpful for a short while; they can also get you in trouble (i.e., lower rank) with the search engines. Examples include “keyword stuffing” (filling your page with keywords to the point that it no longer makes sense), tools that help you build links by blindly pushing content onto other people’s blogs, and automatic link exchange tools.

3. Be careful with accepting paid advertisements on your website. I learned this one the hard way earlier this year, when I agreed to put 4 links at the bottom of every page on my site. The links turned out to have nothing to do with my website content; Google penalized me heavily for that mistake! That’s not to say that you can’t accept any paid advertising; just get advice from a professional before you do so.

4. Learn your keywords. Keywords and keyword phrases are the foundation of any SEO strategy. There are many keyword tools available to help you discover and evaluate potential keywords; try a few tools and pick the ones that make the most sense to you. Then use those tools to compare different keyword phrases. Check your website stats (if you don’t have Google Analytics yet now is the time!) to see what keywords are already bringing you traffic, and compare how well different keywords convert (i.e., the visitor buys something, or signs up for your newsletter.) Look at sites similar to yours to see what keywords they are using, too.

5. Write for your audience, not the search engines. Start with your keyword phrases, but don’t let them overly influence how you write your copy. It’s more important to provide content that is relevant to your desired visitors and easy for them to read. Get feedback and revise and improve; this is a never ending process! Hire a professional copywriter to help you. Even if you never learn anything else about SEO, if you keep tweaking your copy to be better and better for readers, you’ll do well – because ultimately, search engines want to serve up pages that their visitors will find helpful!

6. Keep your content fresh. Search engines love new content; it’s also what will keep visitors coming back to your site! A blog is an easy and efficient way to do this. If you add new posts often, the search engine spiders will visit more often, too – meaning that your latest post will get attention sooner, too!

7. Get professional help. Luckily, there are ways to do this that aren’t expensive; some are even free! I recommend the biweekly High Rankings Advisor newsletter, which explains SEO in a laymen-friendly way, all white-hat and practical.
